• SYNOPSIS: For Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman), two sisters from a family of witches in a small, contemporary New England town, falling in love is the trickiest spell of all. They struggle to use their gift for magically guiding fate to overcome their family curse: The men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death!

• Making Magic (5:55) - Go behind the scenes with the cast and crew of Practical Magic as they share their insights on bringing Alice Hoffman's novel to the screen.

• RATING: PG-13 for some violence, intense thematic elements and sensuality.

• NOTES: Okay, a few things to note. For starters, the first print run includes a slipcover. Second, there are some things lost among the extras. Rather infuriating, the only new extra that was created for the movie - "The Power of Practical Magic": Nearly 30 years after Practical Magic first cast its spell, the women who made it revisit the story, sisterhood and world that turned an unconventional film about witches into a generational touchstone. - has been relegated to being a DIGITAL-EXCLUSIVE! Such bullshit. What you will find on the 4K disc are two featurettes created at the time of the film's 1998 theatrical release which were hidden behind a game on the original 1998 DVD. (In case you're curious, you can skip the DVD's game by going into the cauldron, and selecting Rosemary, Mint, Grapes, Lavender, then Mix.) While it's nice that we don't have to jump through that hoop to watch the featurettes on the 4K disc, what we can't watch are the DVD's four TV Spots ("Enchanting", "Sisters", "Supernaturally", and one mislabeled as a "Theatrical Trailer"). I have no idea why Warner didn't port them over to this new 4K disc. In total, it's only two minutes of footage, so there was plenty of room for them, even upscaled to HD. The DVD's text extras are also not here, but that's to be expected. I saved them on The Corner Penthouse Facebook page, if you're interested. All that said, this 4K disc is a VAST IMPROVEMENT over the DVD, especially because everything is on one side of the disc. (The DVD is dual-sided, with the movie on one side and the extras on the other.) As for Blu-ray, the movie's only release here in the U.S. was as a single-disc double feature with The Witches of Eastwick, with no extras for either film. So, here's hoping that Eastwick gets a 4K release with on-disc extras really soon.

• NOTES: The first print run of the "25th Anniversary Edition" includes an embossed slipcover. This is a hard one to recommend. Five years ago, there was a "20th Anniversary Edition" 4K + Blu-ray, and there probably will be another one of these in another five years. Chances are that if you like these films, you already own that release or, more likely, the entire 10-Film Collection on 4K UHD or Blu-ray. So, I'm not really sure who this new single-film release is targeted to. The new "Riding a Legacy: 25 Years of Fast" extra is the only thing you won't find on any of the previous releases, and I'm not sure it's enough to warrant a re-purchase. The included Blu-ray disc is the same one that came out back in 2009, so there's nothing new there. I guess if you only like the first film, and have no interest in the rest, this new "25th Anniversary Edition" 4K UHD + Blu-ray is for you.

• SYNOPSIS: George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can't possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.

• RATING: PG for thematic material, some violent content and brief language.

• NOTES: What a charming little film that presents a decent murder mystery, with humor, in a manner that is suitable for the whole family without talking down to anyone. It would pair well with Babe (1995), even though that's not a murder mystery. The first print run includes a slipcover.

He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction...but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

A single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and exit this infinite nightmare?

• NOTES: I have no doubt that director James Nunn was playing a rousing game of Hungry Hungry Hippos and thought to himself, "This would make a great movie." Essentially, this is your standard "killer shark/snake/whatever" movie, but with a hippopotamus. If you like films like Lake Placid and Anaconda, you'll like Hungry. The first print run includes a slipcover.

• SYNOPSIS: The year is 1342 and the Nazis are cutting a deadly swath through Russia. An expert sniper, Vasili's deeds have become legendary - thanks to propaganda produced by Vasili's best friend, a political officer named Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). To stop Vasili, the Germans dispatch their best sniper, Major Konig (Ed Harris), to Stalingrad. An array of sophisticated gadgetry is at Templar's command as he plunges into a cloak-and-dagger netherworld of move and countermove. Cool, too, is Templar's knack for coming up with the right disguise at the right time. Now you see him. Now you don't... or do you? Each close-call escape is a breathless miracle - and no one knows miracles better than a saint.

Yeah, they didn't even port over the commentary to the 4K disc, much less the trailer. Such laziness. • NOTES: When I reviewed the first movie in this new film series back in 2021, I stated that I found the film to be a bit on the boring side because it focused on a new character (Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan) who was difficult to care for, and that the story was about the build-up TO the Mortal Kombat tournament, rather than the tournament itself. This sequel corrects those issues by focusing on Johnny Cage and Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), both characters that we are given reason to care about, and the story takes place DURING the Mortal Kombat tournament. Just for those reasons alone, this is the better of the two films. The fights and effects are still top-notch, too. Also, the first print run of the 4K release includes a slipcover.

Should you wish to complete your kollection... Mortal Kombat (2021) is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, individual Blu-ray, and individual DVD.

The original two 1990s movies - Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) - were recently released by Arrow Video in the Mortal Kombat Kollection on 4K UHD and Blu-ray. Both releases contain new film transfers and new extras, but loses out on the really crappy 1995 animated special found on Warner's Mortal Kombat (1995) Blu-ray, even though it is detailed in the included book. Should you want that special, the best option would be to buy Warner's Triple Feature Blu-ray set, which will give you that disc, an Annihilation disc that you don't need, and Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2011). Legacy is Season 1 of the two-season series. The second season was released as Mortal Kombat: Legacy II (2013), and is available on Blu-ray and DVD.

There are also three animated films in the Mortal Kombat movie series. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge (2020) is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, and individual DVD. Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms (2021) is available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack and individual Blu-ray. Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match (2023) is available on 4K UHD and individual Blu-ray.

Finally, there were two Mortal Kombat television shows in the late 1990s. The Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (1995-1996) animated series is only available on an import DVD, so you'll probably need a region-free player in order to play it. The Mortal Kombat: Conquest (1998-1999) live-action series is available as a Complete Series DVD set.

• SYNOPSIS: A fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world's major cities and all of humanity waits to see if the extraterrestrial visitors have, as they claim, "come in peace." U.S. President James Dale (Jack Nicholson) receives assurance from science professor Donald Kessler (Pierce Brosnan) that the Martians' mission is a friendly one. But when a peaceful exchange ends in the total annihilation of the U.S. Congress, military men call for a full-scale nuclear retaliation.

• Looking Back on Mars Attacks! (7:26) - Filmmakers swap stories about working with Tim Burton on one of the 1990s' wackiest alien-invasion films.
• Ack! Ack! Aesthetic (10:50) - Filmmakers explore the distinctive style of Mars Attacks! and reveal how then-cutting-edge CGI shaped its iconic look.

• RATING: PG-13 for sci-fi fantasy violence and brief sexuality.

• NOTES: Oh, Warner Brothers, why did you still not port over the extras from your 30-year-old DVD? That disc, which was the very first DVD I ever bought, along with Beetlejuice, contains an Isolated Score track for the film, a gag "Martian language" audio track, two Theatrical Trailers, and the usual text extras (cast info and Production Notes). While I would never expect for the last two items to go forward, the audio tracks and trailers were left off of the 2010 Blu-ray, so I hoped they would be resurrected for the 4K release. Sadly, that is not the case. That's not to say that the 4K is bad. The movie looks great, and we do get two new extras, buy you'll still need to hold on to your DVD to hear Danny Elfman's excellent score. The first print run of the 4K includes a slipcover. Oh, by the way, a brief piece of Ghostbusters II stock footage appears at 1:19:35.

• BUY IT: Recorded Blu-ray (Leomark) / DVD (Digiview, Slim Case) / DVD (Desert Island Films).

• SYNOPSIS: Bungling wagonmaster Mr. Callahan (Forrest Tucker) and his assistant Dusty (Bob Denver) lead a group of stranded travelers across the frontier, encountering endless comic mishaps along the way. This movie is four episodes of Dusty's Trail (1973-1974) edited together. The episodes, in the order shown, are: "Tomahawk Territory", "Horse of Another Color", "There is Nothing Like a Dame", and "The Not So Magnificent Seven".

• SPECIAL FEATURES: There are no special features on the Blu-ray disc.

• RATING: Not Rated.

• NOTES: In the past, a lot of media collectors and reviewers liked to rag on Mill Creek Entertainment for producing what they considered to be the dirt-worst Blu-rays ever released. While I can understand why, I never really thought their Blu-rays were all that bad... at least not on my 43" UHD TV. The one exception being December in the Toy Soldiers/December Double Feature, which looked like a VHS transfer upscaled to high definition. That disc looks like reference material compared to Leomark's The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West Blu-ray, which is the ABSOLUTE FUCKING WORST BLU-RAY THAT HAS EVER BEEN COMMERCIALLY RELEASED!!! This is clearly an upscaled transfer from a highly compressed public domain DVD (with a Shoreline Entertainment logo added at the start), which in turn was probably transferred from VHS! Not only are the colors washed out, but there are LOTS AND LOTS OF COMPRESSION AND DEINTERLACING ARTIFACTS, which looks to have been in the DVD source material. This was NOT transferred from film elements. (Two screenshots from the show/movie opening are below, both of which can be enlarged for the original 1920x1080 framegrab. I could have picked even uglier examples, but I'm trying to be nice.)



As if that wasn't bad enough, Leomark put in ZERO effort here. There is NO MENU on the Blu-ray. The movie just restarts at the end. The only positive is that the film is presented in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Remember, this "movie" is just an assemblage of television episodes.

Rather than buying this shitty Blu-ray, pick up a copy of the out-of-print DVD set Dusty's Trail: The Almost Complete First (And Only) Season, which contains 17 of the 26 episodes of the series this "movie" was assembled from. I guess copies of the nine missing episodes were never found among public domain collections. The show was produced by Metromedia Producers Corporation, which was bought by 20th Century Fox in 1986, so if the episode masters still exist, Disney would have them now. So, there's no chance in hell that the show, or the "movie", will have a high-quality "official" DVD or Blu-ray release.

By the way, if you feel like you need a copy of The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West - in addition to, or instead of, the Dusty's Trail set - the "DVD" links in the Buy It section above points to two of the many public domain DVDs out there. I can vouch for the quality of the Digiview DVD in the slim case, as that is what I own, and I don't remember there being any issues with it. While I can't vouch for any of the other public domain DVDs, they can't be any worse than Leomark's Blu-ray.

• NOTES: An excellent documentary about the Garbage Pail Kids phenomenon that was part of my childhood in the 1980s. It is very much in the same vein as the When We Went MAD! documentary that I reviewed last year. The only issue I have with the Blu-ray is that the menu is poorly designed. On my television, the color of the menu highlighter is the same black color as the text elements, so I have no clue where I am on the menu. On my computer, the highlight is brown, so it is a bit easier to see, but there still should have been a more distinct color used.

This documentary isn't the only piece of Garbage Pail Kids video media. The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987) is available on 4K UHD + Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome, though the first release with a slipcover in a hard box with a booklet that was available from Vinegar's site in 2025 is the definitive release. The un-aired Garbage Pail Kids 1988 animated series is available on DVD.

• SYNOPSIS: This heart-tugging film is an adaptation of a classic children's novel and stage play by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Adorable Sara Crewe (Shirley Temple) is treated like a little princess at her boarding school. But when reports of her father's death in the Boer War surface, she is forced into servitude towards the other girls. The unflappable youngster steps up to the challenge of her new lot in life, and ultimately wins over the hearts of wealthy neighbors - and even Queen Victoria herself - as she refuses to give up hope that her father will one day return after all.

• SPECIAL FEATURES: There are no special features on the Blu-ray disc.

• RATING: Not Rated.

• NOTES: Although originally released by 20th Century Fox, The Little Princess (1939) is a film that has fallen into the public domain. As such, there have been a lot of DVD releases in various qualities. This "Newly Restored Archive Collection" release from Film Masters is, to my knowledge, the film's first Blu-ray release. I'm happy to report that is it, likely, the definitive release. While it may not be perfect, the picture quality is great. I wish The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West Blu-ray looked as good as this. The audio is good. Not perfect, but definitely passable; though the quality of the Fox Fanfare at the start isn't the greatest. It gets better after that. Although there are no extras, not even some public domain Shirley Temple film trailers, I really have nothing to fully complain about here. Definitely RECOMMENDED, though do be aware that online listings don't seem to indicate that this is a recorded Blu-ray and not a factory-pressed disc.

Before he can save her, Sinbad must battle an awesome collection of mythical monsters: the man-eating Cyclops, a saber-wielding skeleton, a ferocious two-headed bird called the Roc and a fire-breathing dragon, all animated by the stunning visual effects mastery of Ray Harryhausen.

• SPECIAL FEATURES: The first two items are only on the 4K disc, while everything else is only on the Blu-ray disc, which is the same one released in 2008. Yeah, just like Paramount with The Saint, the commentary wasn't ported over to the 4K disc.

• The Harryhausen Chronicles (57:56) - This 1998 TV special, narrated by Leonard Nimoy, contains loads of interview clips featuring Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, Charles Schneer, George Lucas, Tom Hanks, Kathryn Grant, Todd Armstrong, and many others. Of course, there us also vintage photos and clips from Harryhausen's most famous productions.
